We interviewed Sean to give you the scoop on who he is and what he loves about working for JMT Technology Group. Read on to learn more!

What do you do at JMT Technology Group?

I am the Deputy Director of Geospatial Solutions for JMT Technology Group. My focus is to support the management of projects along with overseeing our GIS resources.

What brought you to JMT Technology Group?

As a high school student pondering the next chapter of my life, I wanted to study something fun, a career that had potential. I was attracted to the outdoors at an early age and loved spending time in the woods or on the lake. I wanted to incorporate this love for the outdoors into a career that had growth opportunities and the potential to work within the environmental space. GIS or Geographical Information Systems checked all of my boxes and I already loved studying a good map to find a destination or a new space to fish or hunt. I began my college adventures at Shippensburg University of PA, where I majored in Geography, Environmental Land Use with a GIS certificate. Through my land use coursework, I quickly learned that GIS skills were essential to numerous data-driven fields. While finishing up my degree, I joined JMT as a GIS intern and later began supporting the planning department in JMT's York, PA office. I then joined JMT Technology Group as a GIS technician, then became a senior GIS specialist, then GIS manager, and finally, I transitioned into my current role as deputy solution director in 2023.

What do you like most about JMT Technology Group?

I thoroughly enjoy working with the people in our company. We have a great team that understands the importance of being an employee-owned company. There are a lot of opportunities at JMT - I appreciate the ability to grow within the company and across departments.

What type of projects do you like to work on most?

The projects I find to be most rewarding are the ones that provide a positive contribution to the citizens and community within the project area. These projects are related to community, environmental, and infrastructure planning. Internally, I enjoy working with the GIS team to plan and discuss their career goals while providing them with opportunities to succeed.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into this industry/career?

The technology industry is ever-evolving and changing by the day. When I began my career I would have never imagined the advancements of technology currently in our industry. I would recommend to those first starting their career in geospatial solutions to be diversified in their knowledge and proficiencies of geospatial tools and platforms. The geospatial industry has unlimited potential for career opportunities. Be unique and think outside the box.

What is something new and exciting that you’re working on?

I am currently working on a sewer project for Charleston Water System in Charleston, SC. The project involves collaboration and support to our Charleston Survey Department. JMT’s survey department is responsible for collecting field data on the survey network while our GIS team imports and reviews collected data. Our teams are working to implement the Esri Utility Network Solution for Charleston Water System to improve efficiencies and grow the potential of modeling capabilities to our current workflow.
